General Office Policy

At Corsica Women’s Health everyone who enters our office is treated with dignity and respect regardless of age, color, creed, sexual orientation or social status. We are here to listen to your concerns and provide unbiased advice and care to the best of our ability.

Confidentiality

Since many personal matters are discussed here, one of our primary principles is that of maintaining confidentiality. Our Health Information Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) policy is provided to each client annually in writing. It is also posted on the wall in our waiting room. For more information, visit http://www.hhs.gov/ocr/privacy/

Billing/Insurance/Payments

We accept cash, checks and credit cards (VISA, Mastercard, and Discover), and we participate in most insurance plans including Medicaid and Medicare. For some high-cost items such as intrauterine devices, we may ask for prepayment, or for you to obtain the item prior to your visit. We have a written policy regarding billing, insurance, and payment issues you will be asked to read and sign. Please request a copy if needed. For questions about your bill, please call (443) 262-8103.

Electronic Medical Records

Our office uses electronic medical records EMR which you will find convenient and efficient to access, as well as a far more secure method for storing your confidential records. EMR enhances our ability to communicate with your primary care provider and to integrate laboratory and imaging results into your chart. It also allows us to send prescriptions directly to your pharmacy electronically, eliminating the need for handwritten prescriptions which can be difficult to read, can be misinterpreted or get lost.

Patient Portal

In order to base our care on the most accurate information possible we continue to ask patients to complete a medical history form. Now, however, instead of using a clipboard and pen, our patients use a computer to visit a secure website:Corsica Women's Health Patient Portal. Completing this easy process takes approximately 20 minutes. Help is available in the office if needed. For the convenience of those who have not completed their record prior to their appointment we have a workstation in our waiting room.

Staff

John J. LaFerla, MD, MPH is an experienced and accomplished gynecologist with many years of clinical experience. He had an academic practice, performing research and teaching medical students and young doctors before settling on Maryland’s Eastern Shore in 2001. Dr. LaFerla has helped to deliver over 5,000 babies in his career, but now focuses solely on women’s health care in the office in Centreville, in Choptank healthcare clinics and at Chester River Hospital in Chestertown and the Surgical Center at Easton where he performs gynecologic surgery. He holds a lifetime certification by the American Board of Obstetricians and Gynecologists after completing medical school in Albany, New York and residency at the University of Rochester. Dr. LaFerla has also had training in both mind/body medicine and public health, and serves part-time as the Deputy Health Officer at Talbot County Health Department.

Dr. LaFerla believes strongly in prevention and staying well. For example, our office was the first location on the Eastern Shore where young women could get vaccinated against HPV, the virus implicated in cervical cancer. His client centered approach to medicine means that the focus always remains on the patients’ needs. We thus provide care that is individualized for each woman.

Pamela M. Fleckenstein, CRNP has been helping women on the Eastern Shore for decades. She especially enjoys educating young women about their bodies and helping them through life’s transitions such as adolescence and menopause. She performs the full range of ambulatory gynecologic care including pap smears, annual check-ups, breast screening, and in-office biopsies. She also diagnoses and treats infections such as vaginitis, sexually transmitted illnesses, and urinary tract infections. Another area of expertise is in helping women select the best form of contraception.

Pam is certified by the state of Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene and by the National Certification Corporation as a Woman’s Health Care Nurse Practitioner. She is licensed by the Maryland State Board of Nursing. She attained both BSN and MSN degrees from Wilmington College, having previously attended Salisbury State and Radford Universities. She is active in many community organizations.

Denise Richardson, RDMS performs ultrasound examinations in our office using the latest up-to-date equipment. She has over 16 years of experience and is certified by the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography, and The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists. Denise attended Chesapeake College as well as the UMBC School of Ultrasound. She later had clinical training at several major hospitals on the Western Shore. To thoroughly evaluate pelvic structures, she often will perform vaginal as well as abdominal ultrasound.
